The Bernina Express

From glaciers to palm trees — cross the Swiss Alps aboard the world's most spectacular panoramic railway, from Chur, Switzerland's oldest town, to Mediterranean Tirano in Italy.

A journey in a class of its own

One line. Two worlds. Four seasons in a single day.

The Bernina Express traces the UNESCO World Heritage Albula and Bernina lines through untouched Alpine landscapes — past wild gorges, over the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct, up to the glaciers of the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres, and down through the spiralling Brusio Circular Viaduct to the palm-lined piazzas of Tirano, Italy.

Modern panoramic carriages with vast skyward windows, at-seat dining and complimentary Wi-Fi make the impossible feel effortless: first-class comfort through terrain that took railway pioneers a century to conquer.

The panoramic carriage experience

Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows curve into the roofline, so the Morteratsch Glacier, Lago Bianco and the peaks of the Bernina massif feel close enough to touch — all from a climate-controlled seat.

  • Extra-large panoramic windows in every carriage
  • Snacks, Swiss wines and coffee served at your seat
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and a digital travel companion
  • Multilingual commentary on the route's highlights

Designed for the view

Interiors are calm and contemporary — leather seating, generous tables and wide aisles — because on this railway, the landscape is the décor. Sit back as the train climbs 1,800 vertical metres without a single cogwheel, one of the steepest adhesion railways on earth.

Every seat is reserved, every window a private cinema screen onto the Alps.

The Pullman Class Experience

For those who believe the golden age of travel never ended: the Rhaetian Railway's heritage Pullman salon carriages, lovingly preserved from the 1930s, bring polished wood panelling, plush armchair seating and windows that still open to the mountain air.

Gliding over the same UNESCO line as the modern Bernina Express, Pullman departures turn the journey itself into the destination — champagne service, intimate salon atmosphere, and the unhurried romance of classic Alpine railway travel.
